While 鐵路 is the formal term for the entire infrastructure, Hong Kong people rarely use it in daily conversation when referring to the local transit system. Instead, they almost exclusively use 地鐵 to refer to the MTR network or 火車 for the East Rail Line. Use 鐵路 primarily when discussing urban planning, government policy, or international rail systems.
