About YumCha
YumCha is a Cantonese learning app built specifically for Cantonese, not a Mandarin app with Cantonese tacked on. Every word has native Hong Kong audio, every tone is practiced with visual color coding, and every lesson reflects how Cantonese is actually spoken.
Why Cantonese deserves its own app
Cantonese is spoken by around 80 million people worldwide. It is the language of Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong province, and a vast global diaspora. It has six tones, its own vocabulary, its own grammar patterns, and a literary and cinematic tradition that has shaped Asian pop culture for decades.
Despite all this, most language platforms treat Cantonese as an afterthought. Mandarin gets the flagship course, the native speakers, the speech recognition. Cantonese gets whatever is left, or nothing. Heritage speakers trying to reconnect with family language and travelers heading to Hong Kong often find themselves without good options.
YumCha exists to change that. Everything in the app, from audio to romanization to the lesson structure, is designed around Cantonese from the ground up.
What makes YumCha different
- Native Hong Kong audio on every word. Not synthesized, not generic Mandarin, actual Hong Kong Cantonese recordings.
- Speech recognition for pronunciation feedback. Get instant feedback on your tones and pronunciation. This is rare for Cantonese.
- Six-tone practice with visual color coding. Each tone has its own color throughout the app so you can see tone patterns at a glance.
- Both Jyutping and Yale romanization. Switch between systems based on your preference or what you already know.
- Traditional and simplified characters. Defaults to traditional (Hong Kong standard) with simplified available.
- Spaced repetition flashcards. The app schedules reviews automatically so you retain what you learn.
- 120,000+ entry dictionary. Look up any word with Jyutping, Yale, English, example sentences, and traditional and simplified forms.
- AI Cantonese tutor. Ask questions, practice dialogues, and get explanations anytime.
- Real-life scenario lessons. Dim sum ordering, giving directions, shopping, making plans with friends, not textbook abstractions.

The name
Yum cha (飲茶, jam2 caa4) literally means "drink tea" in Cantonese. It refers to the culture of going out to a teahouse to drink tea, eat dim sum, and spend time with family and friends. It is casual, communal, and central to Cantonese identity. We chose the name because language learning, like yum cha, works best when it is a daily habit shared with others.
