How it's used
While 打折 is widely understood, local speakers often prefer using 折 directly as a verb or noun, such as 呢個有八折 or 幫我打個八折. Using 打折 can sometimes sound slightly more influenced by Mandarin, whereas native speakers frequently use 減價 to describe the general act of discounting or putting items on sale.
Examples
This shirt is on sale, can I get an extra discount?
The shop is having a storewide discount today, and many people are queuing up to buy things.
Related words
Common mistake
Learners often confuse the math behind discounts. In Cantonese, 八折 means 80% of the original price, which is a 20% discount. Saying 打八折 does not mean taking 80% off the price.
