How it's used
Dates in Cantonese are expressed by adding 日 after the number, so the fourteenth of the month is simply 十四日. When referring to a duration of time, the structure is number plus 日, which is functionally identical to the date format but distinguished by the surrounding context. Unlike some languages that use specific ordinal markers, Cantonese relies entirely on the number itself to indicate the date.

Common mistake
Learners often confuse the date with the duration. While context usually clarifies this, adding 號 after the number is a common way to explicitly signal that you are referring to a calendar date rather than a span of time.
