How it's used
Although 許多 is understood in Cantonese, it is primarily a written or formal term that sounds quite stiff in casual speech. Native speakers almost exclusively prefer using 好多 for the concept of many or much in daily conversation. Using 許多 in a relaxed setting can make you sound like you are reading from a textbook or a formal news report.
Examples
There are many people queuing here.
Do you know that many people like him?
Related words
Common mistake
Learners often use 許多 because it appears in dictionaries, but it is rarely used in spoken Cantonese. Stick to 好多 to sound more natural and avoid sounding overly formal or academic.
