How it's used
Carries a very heavy and serious connotation because it is almost exclusively used to describe suicide attempts. It is rarely used to describe someone simply diving into the water for a swim, for which people would use terms like 游水 or 跳水 instead. Because of its dark meaning, it is often used in news reports or urgent warnings.
