How it's used
People often use the verb 出 to describe the appearance of the rash, as in 出水痘. It is widely considered a rite of passage for children, and adults who contract it for the first time often experience much more severe symptoms than children do.
Examples
He had chickenpox when he was a child, and his whole body was covered in red spots.
Did you catch chickenpox when you were a child?

Common mistake
Do not confuse this with 生蛇, which is the term for shingles. While both are caused by the same virus, 生蛇 refers to the reactivation of the virus later in life, usually appearing as a painful band of blisters on one side of the body.
