How it's used
This examination system was officially abolished in 2012 and replaced by the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education. Despite its discontinuation, the term remains deeply embedded in the collective memory of Hong Kong people as a major life milestone. It is often used as a benchmark for age or generation, as those who sat for it are now considered part of an older cohort.
Examples

Do you still remember which subjects you took for the HKCEE?

Common mistake
Learners should be aware that this is a historical term and is no longer used in the current school curriculum. Using it to describe a current student's exam will cause confusion as the modern equivalent is 文憑試.
