How it's used
Locals often refer to the currency simply as 葡幣 to distinguish it from the Hong Kong Dollar. While the official name is 澳門元, using 葡幣 is extremely common in daily life when shopping or exchanging money in Macau. Note that while Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted in Macau, the reverse is rarely true for the Pataca in Hong Kong.

Common mistake
Do not confuse the currency with the Portuguese Euro, even though the name 葡幣 might imply a connection to Portugal. It is specifically the local currency of Macau.
