How it's used
茄瓜 is primarily used in the New Territories and by older generations, whereas 矮瓜 is the standard term used in urban markets and supermarkets across Hong Kong. Both refer to the same vegetable, but you will find 矮瓜 on almost every price tag in a grocery store. It is worth noting that the term 茄子 is also understood but is perceived as a more formal or written term borrowed from Mandarin.
