How it's used
Standalone 謝 is rarely used in modern spoken Cantonese as a verb on its own. Instead, speakers almost exclusively use 多謝 when expressing gratitude for a gift or a service, or 唔該 when thanking someone for a small favor or asking for assistance. Using 謝 alone can sound overly formal, literary, or like a clipped version of a Mandarin expression.
Examples
Thanks a lot, thank you for your help.
Related words
Common mistake
Learners often mistakenly use 謝 as a direct translation for thank in all situations. Remember that 唔該 is for small favors or requests, while 多謝 is for receiving gifts or significant help.
