Definition
The whole family; all family members.
colloquialfamilypeople
How it's used
Refers to the entirety of a household or family unit, often used to emphasize that everyone is included in an action or state. While it is a neutral term for family, it is also the base for a very common and severe Cantonese profanity. Because of this, speakers sometimes prefer using 全家 to avoid any risk of being misunderstood in formal or sensitive contexts.
Examples
The whole family went on a trip, there is no one at home.
Related words
Common mistake
Be extremely careful when using this term in isolation or with certain verbs, as it is the foundation of a highly offensive curse. If you are a learner, it is safer to use 全家 to express the same meaning without the risk of accidentally sounding aggressive or vulgar.
